James P Blaylock's 'Digging Leviathan' is a superb book, one of the best I've ever read in my life, a sometimes frenzied, sometimes somber race between mad scientists, good (William Hastings and young Giles Peach) and evil (the abominable Hilario Frosticos).5/5(4).

First he invented a working model of the Solar System, powered by the motor from and old electric fan. Next he invented a mechanical man whose legs were roped-together tin cans.

Finally he began work on the grandest invention of all: a machine that would burrow to the center of the Earth, a digging leviathan.

Absurd. Perhaps. The Digging Leviathan is like a love letter to childhood spent with the imagination wide open, but written from an adult's perspective.

There are moments focalized by both youthful and mature characters alike, with a sense of romantic visions of "yesteryear," that time before our rational minds murdered childhood fantasies and consigned.
